Osman Can Yerebakan’s Dispatch | Miami Beach, Dec 3, 2019
The 8th edition of UNTITLED, ART opened today steps away from the South Beach and welcomed industry figures, including those who eschewed the brutal New York snow to embrace the generous Miami sun as well as visitors from South America, Europe, Asia, East Africa, and beyond.
126 exhibitors unveiled their booths at 1pm to a rush of visitors previewing works by emerging and established artists working in a range of media, primarily painting and sculpture. As the inaugural writer-in-residence at UNTITLED, I am excited to report on threads, trends and tendencies running across the booths throughout the fair and highlight artists who tackle pressing issues of identity, history, and the body in upcoming days. “Our objective here is to include an inclusive roster of artists through a curatorial vision,” told me UNTITLED Founder Jefrey Lawson, as we stood by Wendy White’s “Jofa” installation, a mammoth sofa made out of denim scraps, taking center stage at the fair’s lounge area.
Galerie Magazine’s Art and Culture Editor Lucy Rees and I perched on the same sofa earlier today to share our picks from the opening day. We talked about the intersection of art and design through artists blurring the distinction between sculpture and function, and discussed a handful of names whose use of materiality, form, and dimension caught our eyes.
